Movember Daily Men’s Health Tips

While November is a busy season for family, football, turkey and holiday celebrations, it has also become a time to raise awareness about men’s serious health issues such as heart disease, prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. Commonly referred to as Movember, this month-long annual event is recognized by men growing moustaches and beards, started by the Movember Foundation (us.movember.com). MENAJI has been part of Movember since its beginning, and this year, in addition to supporting raising money, we’ve put together a month’s worth of healthy lifestyle tips to help you tackle some of these challenges. We hope the following ideas are helpful.

  1. Happy World Vegan Day. Studies show that a plant based diet is better for your heart and the planet. Veganism also includes animal-free products like our vegan CAMO Concealer which provides undetectable spot coverage for blemishes, breakouts, dark under eye circles, redness, and irritated skin.
  2. Stay hydrated inside and out. Sorry guys, coffee won’t cut it. You need six 8 oz cups of water daily. Hate water? Then add some fruit, lemon or mint. To help keep your skin healthy and hydrated, remember to moisturize too. Use our Power Hydrator AfterShave, to soothe your newly shaved face with powerful nutrients without the sting of alcohol-based aftershaves.
  3. Carnivore or herbivore or somewhere in between? Make sure you get an average of at least 80 grams of lean plant or animal protein daily. For an easy post workout boost, try protein powder mixed with ice, almond milk and fruit. Post workout shower, try our Deep Cleansing Masque to detoxify, nourish and energize your skin, absorb oil, exfoliate and reduce pore size.
  4. Exercise 60 minutes daily. Get off the couch and get to the gym or take a run. Your heart will thank you later.
  5. Feeling tired and depleted? Try a multivitamin, one specifically designed for men. For puffy eyes, try our 911 Eye Gel – it’s a miracle worker.
  6. Is it Friday yet? Before you hit the bar, think about limiting alcohol intake. Your liver and your wallet will thank you. Plus you’ll save yourself from a hangover.
  7. Flossing is forever. If you want to keep your teeth healthy, you need to take care of your gums. So floss. Every. Single. Day.
  8. Late night or long trip? Stay hydrated and do light exercise today, and shut off those electronic devices and get to bed at a decent hour. You need a proper 8 hours to perform your best. To give skin a boost, before bed use our Anti-Aging Eraser serum to enhance skin elasticity, strength and texture, reduce redness and age spots, sun and weather damage. You’ll wake up feeling (and looking) like a million bucks.
  9. Time flies…did you make your annual physical appointment? If not, you should and make sure to get a flu shot, as well as a PSA test to detect prostate cancer. Don’t forget!
  10. Men are more likely to get skin cancer. If you enjoy being outside, be sure to wear sunscreen minimum SPF 30. Our newest product, Power Hydrator Plus incorporates after shave, tinted moisturizer and a powerful sunscreen to offer convenient all in one grooming and sun protection. (product shot)
  11. An apple a day. Keep your pipes clear by eating plenty of fiber to keep fats and cholesterol in check. Fiber friendly foods include whole grains, veggies, fruits, nuts and beans.
  12. Here’s to honoring the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes on this Veteran’s Day. Today and everyday. It’s important to remember.
  13. Feeling blue? Help others! Studies show that giving back helps people better. Check out @ThirstProject which helps bring clean water to areas around the world that need it most. #savewater
  14. Going to holiday parties? Give yourself a confidence boost. If you’re looking blotchy or have under eye circles, try our iconic Urban Camo concealer in several skin tone shades.
  15. Get outside! If you like to run, hike or bike, studies show that being in nature and spending time outdoors decreases depression and anxiety. Just remember to bring the sunscreen and keep your lips moisturized and protected from sun with our Lip Agent.
  16. Had another late night? Hope it was fun, but try to wake up at the same time each day. Eat some protein for breakfast like a Greek yogurt and granola. For puffy eyes and dark circles the morning after, try our 911 Eye Gel – it’s a secret weapon used by models, actors and athletes.
  17. Slow down and relax. Studies show stress is the leading cause of heart disease. To save time, try our convenient 3 in1 Clear Shave Formula, which benefits face, head and body. It will come in handy once you shave your mustache!
  18. Get social. Studies show that spending time (in real life not just online) with friends and family increases longevity. So call your mom. Maybe take her to lunch and shopping. Then you can hop back onto Instragram and tell us how you’re doing!
  19. Tough day? A dose of mindfulness helps. Take some deep breaths, and count to 10 – this helps you focus on the present and away from your worries. Next, take a hot shower and try our Face & Body Scrub which helps exfoliate, clean and renew your skin with organic lime peel oil, jojoba, ginseng, kelp, azulene and aloe.
  20. Eat the rainbow! Make sure your diet contains various bright colors of fruit and veggies daily, especially greens – for maximum nutrition. Think sweet potatoes, pomegranates, blueberries, beets, carrots, and spinach. Organic and locally grown are best.
  21. Work the mind, not just the body. Remember the library? Find a good book. Then book your next trip to expand your horizons and feed your soul. Remember to check out one of our fabulous kits like the Gregory Travel Kit -perfect size for travel or the gym.
  22. Avoid the winter blues. Make sure you get outside daily and soak in some natural light. Open the windows, and get a special full spectrum bulb for your desk lamp. Then check out our HDPV Anti-Shine Sunless Tan to keep you looking like you’re just back from vacation. This undetectable, easy-to-use powder will give you a healthy summer glow without the sun damage.
  23. Hit the gym. You have a big eating day coming up tomorrow. (Plus the gym might be closed.) Be sure to take a sauna for a quick detox afterward and try our Deep Cleansing Masque to detoxify, nourish and energize your skin. Our specially formulated Masque addresses the 20% higher oil production in men’s skin that other clay and mud masks do not.
  24. Happy Thanksgiving! Gratitude counts. Remember to acknowledge the ones we love and good in our life. People who are grateful are healthier. Now go watch football and enjoy some turkey.
  25. Get productive. After sleeping in, get a headstart on your holiday gifts with our Black Friday gift sale.
  26. Take a yoga class and find your inner shine. But in the outside world, don’t let them see you sweat. After class, try our Liquid Powder Shine Eliminator, which absorbs excess oil and knocks out shine to deliver a soft, ultra matte finish.
  27. Need motivation? Team up with a friend to workout or compete in a race. Check out the Movember Foundation for tips and ideas to raise money for men’s health issues.
  28. Talk it out. Sometimes life is overwhelming. If you’re feeling depressed or suicidal, please talk to your doctor, or visit the Suicide Prevention Hotline.
  29. Keep it clean. Flu season is here, so be sure to wash your hands often – before eating and after using the bathroom, especially while traveling and at the office. And after a long day, wash off with our Face & Body Scrub which helps exfoliate, clean and renew your skin.
  30. Check yourself out. Testicular cancer strikes young and old, and is the most common cancer in men aged 15-34 in the US. Do a self-check monthly and feel for any changes or lumps.

Tips for Men: How to choose the right shade?

Today, men understand that concealer, tinted moisturizer or powder/foundation can help them look better, .e.g. even out redness, lessen the appearance of imperfections. These products also can help you look more awake, healthy, refreshed and youthful. But if you can’t try the shades in person, how best to choose the right shade for your needs?

The answer is that often there is no single right shade. While your shade depends on your natural skin type, it also depends on what area you are looking to improve, the season, the lighting, time of day, and other factors.  So, to keep it simple, here are a few tips:

Start with a clean slate. First always use a simple cleanser followed by a moisturizer so the skin is prepped to absorb the tinted product.

If you are choosing between two shades, always go for the slightly darker shade. The lighter shade will only make you look older. Just be sure to apply with a light hand and blend really well, especially along the jawline. You can use your fingers, or a sponge to apply;  just remember less is more.

Check the undertone of your skin. When looking at your face, it is hard to see the true shade. So check the inside of your arm. Most people with ivory/beige skin will benefit from a tint with a yellow or olive shade – which adds color and life to the skin and counteracts redness. People with bronze/dark ebony skin should match their undertones more exactly. Because you may have several shades on your face, especially in your cheeks and jawline, you may need to blend two or more shades depending on the darkness of the undertone.

Celebrity make-up artist Barry White who is the go-to-groomer for the likes of LeBron James, and the singer Dave Matthews, explains, “When blending make-up, always come as close as you can to matching your complexion.  Sometimes, it may be best to go a half a shade lighter and then use a little bit darker shade and blend those two together. With the right products, this is easy to do.”

If you have very dark ebony skin, you may benefit from brightening (which is not the same as lightening). What this means is that after you apply the appropriate shade, you blend a lighter shade to the center of your face (from forehead, under eyes, cheeks and top of chin). Shades with an orange, golden base really help to brighten bronze/ebony skin. You can also use a slightly lighter shade powder in the center of your face.

Give it time to absorb. Wait a few minutes to let the product soak in and absorb any redness or discoloration. It will take a moment for your eye to adjust to your skin’s more neutral tone.

Go easy. As with fair to medium toned skin, go easy with the products, don’t use too much. Blonde men especially need to blend sparingly even if your skin is more medium.

Remember, choosing a shade takes time so try to experiment when you’re not in a rush or tired. Given the range of colors, finding your correct shade has never been easier. If you’re still unsure, send us a selfie for a consultation. We’re always happy to help!

NBA Veteran Rashad McCants Talks Grooming & Style

Rashad McCants and Ice Cube during Ice Cube’s Hollywood’s Walk of Fame honor on Monday, June 12, 2017.

Recently MENAJI had the privilege of sitting down with NBA veteran Rashad McCants – the #1 draft pick in Ice Cube’s BIG3 and former University of North Carolina Tarheel – as he exclusively revealed his favorite style shortcuts, easy 1-2-3 grooming and much more.

Guard Rashad McCants was selected by Trilogy (a team led by Kenyon Martin, Al Harrington and coach Rick Mahorn) with the No. 1 overall pick in the BIG3 draft. The BIG3 is a three-on-three league involving former NBA players. More than 70 players have signed up in hopes of playing for one of the eight teams in the league.

Q: Having come from a very athletic family (younger sister is a former WNBA star Rashanda McCants, and two cousins one, a Major League Baseball player Cameron Maybin an other, the former Canadian Football League player Jon Avery) –  how did that affect you growing up? Did you feel pressure to be an athlete?

A: As a family, we never considered ourselves an athletic family. We just had a competitive spirit growing up, which drove my sister and me to strive at the highest levels of competition.

Q: You have enjoyed a fascinating professional life.  Can you tell us about your basketball career?

A: I don’t think I can narrow down my whole career in a few sentences but I can say it has been one of the more interesting roller coaster rides anyone could possibly imagine. And all in all, I’m grateful for all that I’ve encountered – the good, the bad, and the ugly. It has shaped me into the man I am today.

Q: You have such diverse interests. How do you define your personal style?

A: I define my personal style by the music and idols that I’ve chosen growing up. From Tupac Shakur to Will Smith to Kobe Bryant to Allen Iverson. The list goes on and on but mainly I’m stuck in the era that raised me. Gives me my own personal style of mixed personalities.

Q: How does your skin care and grooming routine fit into your personal style?

A: Over the years I have had a difficult time treating my skin properly. With pimples and razor bumps it’s always been a mission to get clear skin that can match my clean style that I see for myself.

Q:  Given that athletes sweat and shower multiple times per day, have you had any specific grooming challenges?

A: My main grooming challenge has always been razor bumps, which leave my skin scarred and irritated.

Q: Which one of MENAJI products have you tried? Which are your favorites?

A: I have tried the facial masque, and the face and body scrub which have shown to produce major improvements in my skin like getting rid of the razor bump problem I’ve always had. This was right on time. (Gotta thank my team for introducing this to me!) 🙂

Q:   Finally, we understand music has a big part in your life.  How did you develop your love of music?

A: Music is my first love! It was Tupac and Michael Jackson who sparked my love of music. Watching their greatness emerge and surpass all entertainment was a true inspiration. And still sticks with me til this day.

Rashad is passionate about another cause too — local community involvement. He’s partnered with Per Diems Against Poverty to combat hunger with 100% of the proceeds supporting Feeding America and other charities that support many worthy causes.

Prior to the BIG3 kick off season, he visited the Boys & Girls Club of America in Brooklyn and hosted a basketball clinic and participated in Manhattan’s Pajama Program—such amazing organizations!

“I am inspired by Rashad’s passion and determination to give back to his community. We are thankful to Rashad for his giving heart and for continuing to look for ways to support families in need.” – Jennifer Barker, Executive Director & Co-founder of Per Diems Against Poverty (www.perdiemsagainstpoverty.org)

Rashad’s generous spirit echoes MENAJI’s commitment to giving back and helping others, and which is why we were thrilled to see him in action – looking confident on the court, on the street, and in his life.

About Rashad McCants

McCants was a standout player at North Carolina and led the university to the NCAA Championship before being selected in the first round of the 2005 NBA draft. He played for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings from 2005 to 2009. He has also played professionally in the D-League, and overseas in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The BIG3 league played on June 25 with the inaugural games held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Touring various locations around the country, the BIG3 will play in Los Angeles at the Staples Center on August 13th.

Why Are Men More Likely Than Women to Get Skin Cancer?

With May being Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we want to spread the word about the importance of using products with sunscreen and and other ways you can protect yourself against the third most common form of cancer among those 15-39 years old. (source: skincancer.org)

Men, especially those with lighter skin, are more likely than anybody else to get skin cancer, including melanoma—the deadliest kind of skin cancer.

Men tend to get more sun exposure than women. Men spend more time outside over their lifetimes than women, and they’re more likely to work outdoors than women. Women’s personal care products, like moisturizer and makeup, often contain sunscreen, while many products for men don’t.

About one-third of U.S. adults get sunburned each year. Sunburn, which can increase your risk of getting skin cancer, is common among white men, young adults, and men who tan indoors. When outside on a sunny day for more than an hour, only about 14% of men use sunscreen on both their face and other exposed skin.

Easy Ways to Protect Yourself

It’s easy to protect yourself from UV exposure—

  • Long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat offer the best protection. If you’re wearing a baseball cap or short-sleeved shirt, make sure to put sunscreen on your ears, neck, and arms.
  • Stay in the shade as much as possible between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., which are peak times for sunlight.
  • Use a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 15 on any exposed skin, and don’t forget to reapply it every two hours, as well as after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.
  • If you work outdoors, ask about sun protection at your job, like wearing sun-protective clothing.
  • Avoid indoor tanning.

(source: CDC cdc.gov)

To make it easier than ever to incorporate sun protection into your daily grooming routine, we’ve introduced POWER HYDRATOR PLUS tinted moisturizer paired with strong UVA-blocking anti-cancer sunscreen for men. This multi-functional product eliminates the extra step to help moisturize, enhance and even skin tone while also protecting the skin from sun damage. Available soon in both stores and online, this new product is a natural addition to the MËNAJI line, as it incorporates healthy skincare and cosmetic improvement with sun protection.
